UK’s biggest domain registrar – 123-Reg – launches GlobalSign Website Passport

UK’s biggest domain registrar – 123-Reg – launches GlobalSign Website Passport

Domain and Hosting Company introduces new trust enhancing technology at FSB Conference in Liverpool

123-Reg, the UK’s largest domain registrar and leading hosting provider, has partnered with GlobalSign, one of the longest established Certification Authorities (CA) and specialists in SSL security, to launch the new GlobalSign Website Passport – designed to help businesses generate more customers and build consumer trust.

The Website Passport, which  is being showcased for the first time  at the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) conference in Liverpool, is an innovative product that allows website owners to prove that they are legitimate, safe to do business with and are not one of the three million+ fraudulent websites that enter the online space every year.

Websites that display the Website Passport are showing customers that their business can be trusted. With just one click on the Website Passport fingerprint logo, customers can view, in real-time, business information in a secure and accredited format. All information within the Passport is vetted by GlobalSign – who has been a leading public Certificate Authority since 1996.

Thomas Vollrath, CEO of 123-reg, commented on the launch: “In a recessionary market where competition is fierce and customer interaction and loyalty is easily swayed, making your business standout from the crowd is essential to achieve success. The Website Passport is a highly effective means of achieving just this as it instils confidence in the customer that the company they are dealing with is credible and their business is being placed in safe hands.”

Furthermore, the Passport can be customised from an array of trust-enhancing ‘apps’.  The first batch of apps include official company information, Web of Trust (WOT) ratings and malware distribution monitoring, the latter of which alerts website owners if their site has been hacked and is unknowingly distributing hidden malware.

“The Internet has become a minefield of fake and fraudulent websites, and the GlobalSign Passport is an essential tool for legitimate sites to build trust with their customers”, said Paul Tourret, GMO GlobalSign Limited. “123-Reg is once again going the extra mile to help its customers drive traffic to their websites, enhance engagement and conversions, minimise abandonment and protect the website from malware injection attacks and potential removal from Google search results.”

123-Reg will be offering Website Passports as a standalone product to allow all organisations to enhance their online presence, establish their legitimate identity, and protect themselves and their customers from malware threats.

For more information about 123-Reg or the Website Passport, please visit http://www.123-reg.co.uk/security/websitepassport.shtml.

The UK’s biggest domain registrar – 123-reg – launches new customer rewards programme

Monday, February 21st, 2011

There aren’t many companies that can boast over a decade at the forefront of web hosting and domain registration, but 123-reg has been leading the way since 2000. As a thank you to their loyal customer base which continues to grow, 123-reg has announced the launch of its new customer rewards programme: 123-loyalty.

The 123-loyalty scheme aims to reward existing customers for their loyalty to the 123-reg brand. Customers can earn loyalty credits when they successfully refer new customers to the company, and the credits can then be used to buy 123-reg products and services. There are various rewards and incentives to be earned based upon the product the ‘friend’ buys and each credit is worth £1.00. The scheme will not only benefit the referrer but also the new customer, who will receive £5 worth of loyalty credits when they become a 123-reg customer.

Customers can monitor their successful referrals from within the online 123-reg customer control panel, with no registration required.  To make referring easy, the 123-loyalty system includes a free, professionally designed marketing email that can be used to invite friends and colleagues to sign-up. The email contains a referral ID code to be entered during the checkout process.

As part of the multi-national Webfusion group of companies, 123-reg has registered over 2.6 million domain names, and in 2010 helped over 40,000 people and businesses get websites online.

Half of web designers are not considering mobile users

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

A large number of web designers are not taking into account mobile web browsers according to research conducted by leading web hosting company Heart Internet (www.heartinternet.co.uk). The survey of 500 web designers (1), run in conjunction with Design Shack (www.designshack.co.uk), found that that only 50% of web designers are considering mobile web access when designing a new website.

Mobile phone web access has grown dramatically in recent years, rising from 0.2% of all UK web traffic in 2009 to 15% in 2011 (2). As more and more users start accessing the internet via their mobile phones, websites built for large monitors and high broadband speeds become more difficult to read and slower to load.

“This year, mobile web access has risen to nearly 15% of all UK web traffic, which means the number of websites missing out on this prime traffic is also increasing. Products such as goMobi have moved to fill this gap, offering users point and click mobile web builder tools,” said Heart Internet director Jonathan Brealey. “With the increasing prevalence of these Do It Yourself tools, professional web designers may be missing out on a lucrative source of revenue.”

David Appleyard, owner of Design Shack, commented: “The volume of traffic accessing websites using mobile phones is only going to rise for the foreseeable future. Web designers need to start adding mobile usability to their list of services quickly, and those who fail to adapt to these changes risk being left behind.”

UK’s biggest domain name registrar launches .so domain names

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

The UK’s largest domain name registrar, 123-reg, has begun accepting pre-orders for .so domain names. Placing a pre-order for these new domain names helps buyers beat the rush to register when they are released at midnight on 1 April 2011.

Pre-orders for .so domain names can be placed online at www.123-reg.co.uk/so. The £19.99 price covers both the pre-order and the first year of the domain name’s registration. Customers also have the opportunity to register a .so domain for up to 10 years.

What’s more, any unsuccessful pre-orders will be refunded in full. 123-reg won’t deduct an admin fee or make any other charges.

How do .so pre-orders work?
It’s quick and easy to pre-order .so domains from 123-reg:

  • Just visit www.123-reg.co.uk/so and search for a domain name. Pre-ordering takes minutes.
  • To maximise the chance of securing each domain for a customer, 123-reg accepts only one pre-order for each domain name.
  • The moment .so domain names are released on 1 April, 123-reg’s automated system will attempt to register all pre-ordered domains.

What is a .so domain?
.so is the domain name extension for Somalia. However, as there are no particular restrictions on who can register .so domain names, they are expected to become popular for a range of uses.

Because .so domain names are so new, there’s a wide choice of short, snappy, options available – unlike more established domain name extensions like .com.

They’re also great for social websites, or making domain names that spell out words ending in .so. To find out more and pre-order .so domain names, visit www.123-reg.co.uk/so today.

The launch of .so domain names follows news that 123-reg is the first in the UK to offer WHOIS privacy for .co domains. This identity-protection service hides domain registration information, helping reduce spam and protecting customers’ personal information.

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Webfusion, one of the UK’s leading web hosting companies, is today announcing it is a sponsor of the IT Donut, a new website that offers free specialist IT advice and support to small businesses.

The IT Donut aims to help small businesses make sense of how they use and purchase IT. Webfusion can help businesses with all their hosting needs, and is able to guide and support small businesses through the myriad of issues they face.

Thomas Vollrath, CEO at Webfusion, says, “A key priority for Webfusion is to support all types of businesses throughout their hosting needs, so sponsorship of the IT Donut is a perfect fit.

Helping confused customers access the Web Thomas Vollrath, CEO, Webfusion

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Websites are no longer simply the online ‘face’ of a business. Customers expect more from a company’s website than a home page. To use an analogy of buying a house, how many people make a purchase based on how attractive they find the outside of a building? Buyers want to be able to enter a home, have a good look around and get a feel of a house, before making a purchase decision.

This is similar to websites. Web 2.0, videos, social media feeds and personalised blogs have seen sites become the lynchpin when engaging, interacting and developing customer experience.

Every business, including yours, has the opportunity to develop groups of customers who they can engage with, increase awareness, and encourage to act as brand advocates.

Businesses should keep in mind the many ways they can interact with customers through their site, because increasingly, new technology is enabling more consumers to get online and access your website.

While this may improve traffic, the array of different ways to access your website, including through desktops, tablets, Smartphones, consoles and apps, is leaving customers confused about the best way to get online, find out further information and interact with your business.

Because of this, businesses at large should consider educating customers in the different ways they can access the internet and how to manage the technology available to them.

So how can businesses help customers make the most of the different ways they can access the internet? Here are our top tips:

  1. Get your customers online. Get Online Week is an annual event held to inspire and help people get online. One of the most astounding statistics is that over nine million people still do not access the internet. Many of these people could be your current, or potential customers; so help to encourage them to get online by including your website address and social media accounts on all stationary, signage and marketing materials.
  2. App what? Many businesses are jumping on the app bandwagon without first listening to their customers. Businesses must pose themselves these questions: How many current customers have Smartphones and use them to access the internet? Would an app be useful to them, or would it confuse them? Apps can be costly to develop, so your business must be sure there is demand before entering the app market.
  3. Don’t ignore technology. If your business decides there is a need for an app, listen to what your customers tell you, and design one that effectively improves your service, rather than designing an ‘app for app’s sake’. 123-Reg for example, responded to upsurges in the number of domain names being registered by launching an iPhone app which enabled users to search for and register domains anytime, anywhere.
  4. Educate customers. If you have developed an app, or mobile website, you must communicate this to your customers. All too often businesses fail to let their customers know that they have developed new ways in which the business can be contacted or accessed, in the assumption that customers will simply find them. The chances are they won’t. Inform customers of the new ways they can access your homepage and services, provide instructions on how to do so, and communicate the benefits.
  5. Keep your website up to date. The array of new technology enabling people to access the internet means more people may visit your website through different devices other than the traditional PC. You should therefore consider investing in your business website to make it more accessible to people browsing your site through Smartphones, tablets and consoles.

Computers, the internet and mobile devices are all seen as essentials by both businesses and customers today, but this was not always the case. Many businesses can be slow to react to changing technologies, and inevitably they get left behind.

By diversifying the ways of accessing your website, technology can prove beneficial to your business. The key is to encourage customers to get online and engage through new devices, and educate them in how they can to do this, to overcome resistance.

In the same way that you look for a new home, there are many options for people to interact with your business online; but, if you remain approachable and customer focused, you can be assured that whatever route they took to find you, the customer will use it again.
